Information On Filing Personal Property Forms

Starting for 2017, taxpayers with up to $20,000 in total personal property acquisition costs in each county will be exempt from personal property taxes however, you must still send in returns with acquisition cost.

Personal Property is a self-assessment system. The taxpayer is responsible for reporting all tangible property that is used in their trade or business, used for the production of income, or held as an investment that should be or is subject to depreciation for federal income tax purposes.

Filing Requirements & Procedures for Personal Property Assessment 50 IAC 4.2

Per IC 6-1.1-2-1.5, the assessment date for Personal Property is January 1st beginning in 2016 and the filing due May 15th each year. Amended returns are allowed within twelve months from the date of original return. Only timely filed original returns can be amended per IC 6-1.1-3-7.5

Under $20,000 Exemption

If you own a business that holds and/or operates equipment with a total acquisition cost under $20,000, you may qualify for an exemption on our tangible business personal property equipment. An Under $20,000 Exemption Form MUST be filed with our office annually.

It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our dear co-worker, Carolyn Lee. 


Carolyn R. Lee, age 64 of Chesterton, passed away on Friday, January 8, 2016, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.  She was born on June 8, 1951, in Fairview, WV, to Franklin and Mary Keefover, both of whom preceded her in death.  On December 1, 1978, she married Larry R. Lee, who survives in Chesterton.  Carolyn is also survived by her children: Bruce Lee of Valparaiso, Kitty (fiance Brian) Moore of Florida, and Kimberly (fiance Mike) Lee of Chesterton; her eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and her siblings: Billie Jean (Robert) McCall of Portage, Nancy (Dan deceased) Parmley of Arizona, Sandra (Carter) Anderson of Texas, and Crystal Renee (Dennis) Grady of Arizona, along with many nieces, nephews and many more loving friends and family. Carolyn was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Chesterton. She was a Deputy Assessor for Porter County and was previously employed at United Tractor.

She enjoyed playing bingo, was an avid bird watcher, and was a wonderful baker of Christmas cookies. Carolyn loved her grandchildren dearly as they will continue to always love her dearly.
